'Trapped capacity' in managed data centresAn industry expert has advised firms that there could be untapped storage space within firms' data centres.Hewlett Packard vice president of enterprise storage and server software Mark Linesch suggested that businesses should be aware that the actual energy usage of a data server is based on workload within their data centre, reports vunet.com. Companies might need to pay increased attention to the storage space they are offered by their managed data centre vendor, he indicated. "There is a difference between what's provisioned and what happens under load at the peak, and that is the trapped capacity," Mr Linesch told the news supplier. Hewlett Packard has launched a business education programme on the issue. Meanwhile, UK and Europe-based firms are more advanced than their US counterparts in data centre optimisation, according to Tony Velte, business development manager at Microsoft integrator Avande, as reported by IDG. ![]() |
