New service 'eliminates wasted power'A new service from IBM claims to provide clients with the ability to gain insight from their infrastructure. The company's Service Management Industry Solutions is aimed at several sectors, including telecommunications retail, and electronics, with the aim of using IT to manage business processes. "A utility could build a smart grid to eliminate wasted power, delivering power to where it is needed most, in real time," the company states. The smart grid could also help companies monitor energy consumption in real time and identify stresses in the electrical grid which can then be solved immediately through pre-emptive maintenance. Firms will have the opportunity to "reduce massive inefficiencies" in their infrastructures and have greater resilience in today's networked world, the computer giant asserts. Implementing software such as Systems Director can further help businesses to enhance the performance of Windows and Linux server platforms, according to the firm. Mike Vizard, senior vice president of market strategies and content services at Ziff Davis Enterprise, told Channel Insider last week that green IT is "saving jobs" in many sectors. ![]() |
