Power consumption 'a key concern' for firmsThe expenditure of energy is a major issue among firms looking to cut costs, a recent report reveals.A study of 792 businesses by systems provider DatacenterDynamics finds that the need to keep operations lean and efficient is currently a key concern among people in data centre management. The research encompasses firms in London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Madrid and reveals the drive to satisfy growth, availability and cost reduction is seeing management becoming more selective in considering strategies and solutions. "A new focus on ongoing operational costs and total cost of ownership revealed that while there is no compelling evidence of drastic budget reduction into 2009, the emphasis of investment and its geography will shift," the organisation states. Trends reveal that investment is turning away from traditional sectors, such as finance and telecoms, towards more diversified data centre spending involving new build and relocation, the source concludes. IBM recently announced its new Service Management Industry Solutions will build IT smart grids to reduce inefficiencies by eliminating wasted power. ![]() |
