Downturn 'could increase converged communication uptake'
The financial downturn could lead to an increase in technological change for businesses including a greater uptake of converged communication solutions, an expert suggests.
John Gantz, the chief research officer at analyst IDC, claims the economic crisis could be an agent for developments of this sort.
He predicts an increase in business transformation, as this usually is the result of a crisis.
"No one is going to transform themselves when things are going well," Mr Gantz states.
Talking to the Intellect Annual Regent Conference 2009, he says the most noticeable changes, which could include uptake of converged communications, are brought about by this type of stimulus.
He states: "The economic crisis will actually force companies to make technological changes [even though] it's easier to pull it off at a better time."
A recent data centre set up by Dell, Nortel, Pillar and VMware, in conjunction with Earth Rangers, is a tenth of the size it could have been and is expected to save 111,000 kWh per year.
