VMware and Intel join to create managed desktopsVMware and Intel have joined forces to create new technology which allows people to use managed desktops and work remotely. The two firms will use Intel vPro technology and are aiming to create systems which allow end users to do their jobs, rather than just provide a new tool. Paul Maritz, president and chief executive of VMware, tells VNUNet: "We need to create an environment tailored to the user, available on any device. Devices come and go and the plumbing should be able to take care of this." The company says the new system could potentially allow employees to choose their own laptop, with the company just controlling the corporate environment. It will allow businesses to create a standard desktop and run it on any desktop or laptop which is fitted with Intel's vPro technology. The companies claim it offers the central management needed but does not restrict the mobility of workers. Jerry Chen, vice president and general manager of the desktop business unit at VMware, tells ChannelInsider the partnership is a "major extension" of the virtualised desktop scheme. ![]() |
