Energy efficiency 'the new IT operational metric'An event is highlighting the importance of sustainability technologies to those companies which use managed hosting applications.IDC's The Role of IT in Corporate Sustainability will explore the links between environmentally-friendly technologies and profitability, focusing on the data centre. Steve Sams, IBM's vice president for site and facilities, claims partners' energy efficiency is becoming more important for businesses, as the price of their managed hosting applications can be affected by it. He states: "With energy costs in the data centre amounting to 30 to 80 times more than traditional office space, now more than ever clients want to get the most bang for the buck." Mr Sams claims that energy efficiency is the new IT operational metric and says clients are taking action to try and achieve the most cost-effective data centres possible. John Gantz, chief research officer at analyst IDC, recently asserted that the economic crisis could lead to an uptake in technologies such as converged communications solutions. ![]() |
