Cost-cutting 'may be overlooked'Businesses may be overlooking "hundreds" of potential IT cost-cutting measures, an expert claims.Industry website TMCNet.com says businesses can often utilise older equipment to save up to 90 per cent, compared to brand new products. Bob Houghton, chief executive officer of industry recycling specialist Redemtech, says there is no specific lifespan for certain servers and applications, which can also make selling items an effective cost-cutting measure. "Virtually everything in the IT portfolio should be looked at as redeployable as long as it can fit in with the company's hardware standard," he tells the publication. It can often be better economics to refresh the lifecycle of older technology, as it gives up the residual value. Sector specialist Rob Lovell, chief executive officer of ThinkGrid, claims companies can help to cut costs and enhance their green IT credentials by hanging on to older equipment, as the process eliminates removal and disposal costs. ![]() |
