Green tool 'reduces energy output'A sector specialist has released a new calculator which aims to identify and resolve unnecessary power usage. The Green Grid, which specialises in developing standards to reduce power consumption in IT organisations, has created the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) calculator. According to the firm, the method divides the amount of power entering an installation by the amount of power used to run its computer infrastructure, which then reveals how much energy be saved. Theo Spittel, director at rack component company Data and Power Solutions, says he has been advising people in data centre management to install monitoring devices as standard. "Of course, installations vary widely but we are confident that we can provide intelligent power solutions to match any requirement, he comments. The Green Grid estimates that for every 2.5 watts of energy entering a facility, only one watt is used for the IT load, illustrating how organisations can reduce their power bills by adopting the metric. ![]() |
