Cloud systems 'gaining popularity'
While the uptake of new IT infrastructure has gradually diminished over the last decade, companies have been moving to do more with the software and hardware that they have available to them, it has been argued.
Datamation has reported that virtualisation, cloud computing and online data storage are now becoming sought-after technologies to further reduce the workloads of company in-house IT specialists.
John Gavin of Akorri commented: "Virtualisation used to be all about the low-hanging fruit, where server consolidation and cost management were the drivers.
"Now it's really all about simplifying management and managing performance issues when in mission-critical applications."
Simon Paton, managing director of CommuniGate Systems UK, recently said that hosted exchange services and unified communications are each capable of providing significant cost saving benefit to firms.
He noted that small to medium-sized firms in particular could be well served by shifting their IT infrastructure in this direction.
