Companies urged to take up deduplicationBusinesses across the UK have been urged to take on data deduplication technology in order to reduce data storage volumes and improve disaster recovery preparedness.Research carried out by Acronis recently revealed that less than half of all business the UK are currently employing data deduplication technology as a matter of course. Kevin Moreau, general manager of Acronis UK & Ireland, said: "Data deduplication is currently a hot topic in the storage industry, but many customers feel like it is out of their reach. It can cut storage requirements by up to 90 per cent by eliminating replicate files or identical blocks of data, therefore dramatically reducing costs." Furthermore, Mr Moreau noted that while many companies believe data deduplication is an expensive process, this is not always the case. Chris Griffin recently argued in his blog for Search Storage that some companies are actually questioning the need for data deduplication, as reducing the amount of stored files could present a problem in data recovery should any information become corrupt. ![]() |
