Firms 'save with green IT'
Businesses across the UK could make significant savings by embracing green IT procedures, it has been argued. Esther Schindler wrote in an article for IT World that significant cost and energy savings could be made by undertaking a few simple alterations at data centres. She noted that by ensuring all hot and cold areas are kept well separated energy usage for servers can be maintained at lower levels, while ensuring good airflow around servers - including underneath the floors - is another way to improve server energy efficiency. Furthermore, Ms Schindler stated that businesses could make use of the free power saving modes which are often built into laptops and hardware to reduce their energy consumption across the board. A recent report by Business Lights showed that FTSE 200 companies could save an average of £305,000 a year by simply ensuring all lights in their offices are turned off when they finish for the day.
