Cloud computing 'could improve green IT'The uptake of cloud computing systems could help companies improve their green IT commitments, it has been claimed.Andy Lawrence, research director for eco-efficient IT at the 451 Group, told the Green IT Expo 2009, that although it is unlikely large firms will fully embrace cloud computing for all their data management needs, the technology does present significant green advantages. He commented: "Cloud computing, which, certainly in our company, is considered to be the big IT trend of the decade, is partially being driven by eco IT concerns because the cloud model really suits energy efficiency." According to a study carried out by Osterman Research and Proofpoint, nearly 40 per cent of IT professionals answered yes to the question, "when I hear the term cloud computing, I am generally confused given the many definitions". Furthermore, 33 per cent of respondents believe cloud computing is more hype than substance, while 24 per cent "weren't sure". ![]() |
