Forward steps for virtualisation
A "bigger picture" approach will be undertaken by businesses switching to virtualisation technology in the future, it has been claimed.
Tom Brand, virtualisation practice lead at GlassHouse Technologies, noted in a blog post for IT Pro Portal that companies will look to install IT infrastructure which offers a greater range of flexibility in terms of productivity and stability in the years ahead, with many viewing virtualisation as a key step in achieving this.
He wrote: "At a high level, technology and operations are both key aspects that need to be planned and tested carefully in order to ensure the transition from pilot to production is a strategic success."
Elsewhere, Owen Cole, technical director with F5 Networks, noted at the recent Storage Expo 2009 that virtualisation technology could help companies improve their green credentials.
He stated that server consolidation brought about through virtualisation uptake would lead to lower energy consumption, resulting in fewer carbon emissions.
