Green IT helps reduce energy loss at data centres

Businesses are embracing green IT practices to help reduce energy wastage at data centres across the UK, it has been claimed.

James Cole, director of IT support services provider Keysource, said at present much of the green IT focus is being placed on recycling heat produced by servers and reducing this energy loss.

"Cooling technologies which utilise ambient temperatures outside the data centre [and] technologies which draw fresh air into the data centre are all sort of at the nub of the technology," he commented.

Mr Cole added energy efficiency is one area where companies should maintain vigilance.

Elsewhere, Envirotech Online recently reported that speaking at the Green IT Expo 2009, Brian Charlton from Siemens noted the complex nature of energy management can make it difficult for businesses to accurately measure the effectiveness of green IT initiatives.

Mr Charlton therefore advised more research needs to be undertaken in this area, as accurate figures are crucial to understanding where improvements in energy efficiency can be made.
