NHS cutbacks 'to impact data security'Data security issues could arise due to the government's decision to cut IT spending in the NHS, it has been claimed.Sureyya Cansoy, associate director at Intellect, said it is imperative that all reasonable precautions are taken to safeguard files and cutting back on investment should not be one of them. "In these tough times, it is important to look at finding efficiencies, but not to undermine the important role that technologies can play in transforming the way in which government works," she commented. According to Alistair Darling, the chancellor of the exchequer, in his pre-Budget report (PBR), IT projects will be included within a £5 billion package of cuts as part of cost-saving efforts within the government and public services. The PBR stated £500 million will be removed from the government's annual spending on IT, including by reducing the cost and scope of the NHS IT programme. ![]() |
