Broadband boost 'good news for firms'

BT has announced it will install its next-generation broadband - known as Infinity - in certain areas of the UK, providing some companies with transfer rates of up to 40 Mb per second (mbps).

Edd Dawson, managing director of broadband.co.uk, said there is an evolution taking place in the UK in terms of the country's IT infrastructure, with many businesses becoming more reliant on the internet than ever before.

He commented: "Infinity's main advantage is its speed, both in terms of download and upload speed, which means that anyone who works in bandwidth-heavy sectors ... will obviously find the improvements most noticeable."

According to worldwide broadband speed rankings by Akamai, the UK was recently ranked 26th in terms of its average download speed.

To put this in relative terms, the UK's average connection speed was 3.4 mbps, while the average speed in South Korea - which took first place in the rankings - was 14.5 mbps.
