Fifth of SMEs 'use cloud computing'
A recent survey carried out by Microsoft has revealed that a fifth (20.9 per cent) of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are now using cloud computing.
The report showed SMEs across the UK are turning to the data management technology due to its cost saving reputation, as well as its additional benefits of greater flexibility, data access and improved disaster recoverability.
"One advantage is that services are bought on a pay-per-need basis, so firms only pay a fee for what they need and are not required to keep updating technology," commented a Microsoft spokesperson.
Elsewhere, Data Storage Connection recently reported the top five cloud computing applications that organisations are likely to pursue in 2010 are collaboration applications, web serving programs, cloud backup, business applications and personal productivity systems.
Eran Farajun, executive vice-president for Asigra, noted the economic downturn has made it difficult for firms to upgrade their IT infrastructure in recent years, although many economists expect the economy to rebound this year.
