VoIP 'will eventually become the standard'
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communications will soon become the standard for business-to-business contact, it has been claimed.
Ian Grayson, technology journalist at Hydrapinion, said the voice will soon simply become another data stream that is transferred over networks, making business communications much cheaper than today's landline and mobile phone-based systems.
He commented: "Now that mobile data rates are falling, the savings can be significant. Actual calling rates will vary but in many markets it is possible to make mobile calls using VoIP over a 3G connection for just a few [pence] per minute."
According to Point Topic, by the end of September 2009, VoIP subscriptions had grown by 15 per cent in the first three quarters of last year to pass the 100-million milestone.
Furthermore, it noted the UK is the country with the tenth highest volume of VoIP subscribers globally - with 2.95 million.
