VoIP 'will take over eventually'
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communications will eventually become the standard for all voice calls, it has been claimed.
Ian Grayson, technology journalist at Hydrapinion, said the trend could be accelerated by the availability of VoIP services on mobiles and the fact call costs can be exceedingly lower than present mobile charges.
He commented: "VoIP will become the standard for all voice calls eventually, as voice simply becomes another data stream carried over IP networks."
Mr Grayson added consumers are beginning to switch from landline and mobile communications to VoIP, mainly because it can be much cheaper and does not suffer from roaming fees. However, he noted customer awareness of these savings still remains low.
According to broadband communications services company Point Topic, by the end of September 2009, VoIP subscriptions had grown by 15 per cent in the first three quarters of the year to pass the 100 million milestone.
