Data separation 'could be more efficient'By breaking down IT infrastructure into separate but well designated areas across two data centres, businesses could improve efficiency, it has been claimed.James Cole, director of Keysource, said whether undergoing the wholesale portioning of networks or through setting up independent facilities, firms could improve efficiency by ensuring storage data is kept apart from that which is live. He commented: "Obviously, there are cost implications about operating two data centres rather than one. It comes back to how much capital a company has to invest in their data centre infrastructure." According to Gartner, separating a local area network (LAN) and a storage area network (SAN) may be the most efficient option for IT infrastructure. However, the firm noted running two networks concurrently also means that complexity and cost can increase, because to switch off the network there must be a window which is amenable to both the LAN and SAN. ![]() |
