Data efficiency 'can improve with IPv6'Businesses could improve their data management efficiency following the switchover to IPv6 addresses, it has been claimed.Duncan Hughes, south-east manager for Brocade UK, said at present, companies are having to translate their internet addresses from IPv4 to IPv6 and this is putting a strain on IT infrastructure. However, when the switchover takes place either next year or the year after, then companies will be able to improve efficiency considerably, as at the moment the translation of address is taking up valuable computing power that in the future can be put to more productive use. Mr Hughes commented: "At the point the internet is running IPv6 you can then take internal infrastructure out, thereby increasing efficiency." According to Intel's general manager for eco-technology Lorie Wigle, the IPv6 is presently being implemented "everywhere we can", but until IPv4 addresses are exhausted, the switchover cannot be completed. ![]() |
