Symbian 'to remain dominant'Symbian is likely to remain the dominant mobile phone operating (OS) system for the foreseeable future, it has been claimed.Robert Ackland, technology management of applications and user interface at the Symbian Foundation, speaking at UC Expo, said new developments by the company will mean the OS remains in a position to react quickly to market demand and to provide consumers with functionality that is second to none. He commented: " Symbian 5 is a blank canvas; it's yours to define. The prediction is we will stay dominant in that timeframe [2012-2014], so a large proportion of phones will be based on Symbian OS." According to figures from Canalys, Symbian's share of the North American smartphone market will increase to 3.4 per cent in 2010. Indeed, Symbian was the leading smart phone platform in Latin America in 2009, taking a 42 per cent market share. ![]() |
